HBB Sequencing- Trio is a genetic test involving the sequencing of the HBB gene to identify mutations or variants associated with hemoglobin and the most common beta-thalassemia. The HBB gene encodes the beta-globin protein, a component of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule in red blood cells. The HBB gene mutation can result in abnormal hemoglobin molecules, leading to various hemoglobinopathies.
This HBB gene sequencing test is performed on parents and their biological children to assess their genetic risk for passing these genetic disorders to their offspring. If both parents have normal HBB genes, the child is at low risk, while if one parent carries a mutation and the other has normal HBB genes, the child is at risk of being a carrier for hemoglobinopathy. However, if both parents carry mutations, the child is at the chance of inheriting a severe form of hemoglobinopathy. However, it is advised that the expected parents must take the HBB Sequencing-Trio test to assess the risk of hemoglobinopathy mutations.
