Overview

  • Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern in which you alternate between eating and fasting. Instead of focusing only on what you eat, it also focuses on when you eat.
  • Intermittent fasting may help you lose as much weight as a balanced diet, so what you eat and how much you eat still matter.
  • Taking a break between dinner and breakfast can fit easily into an Indian routine with everyday foods like dal, roti, and vegetables.
  • Fasting is not safe for everyone. If you take diabetes medicines, talk to your doctor first to avoid your blood sugar dropping too low.

Quick Answer: Does Intermittent Fasting Help With Insulin Resistance And Weight Loss?

Yes, intermittent fasting may help some adults with insulin resistance lose weight and manage their blood sugar levels. However, it doesn’t work better for everyone than eating regular meals with fewer calories. The results depend on your eating habits and lifestyle. If you take medication for diabetes, talk to your doctor before trying intermittent fasting, as it may affect your blood sugar levels.

What Are Intermittent Fasting And Insulin Resistance?

Intermittent fasting means following set times for eating and fasting. A common approach, called time-restricted eating, keeps meals within certain hours each day. What and how much you eat still matter.

Insulin resistance means your body’s cells do not respond well to insulin, the hormone that helps blood sugar enter cells for energy. Over time, blood sugar may rise. Prediabetes means blood sugar is above the normal range but below the diabetes range. Many people have no clear symptoms.

Does Intermittent Fasting Work Better Than A Regular Diet?

Not necessarily. Intermittent fasting usually leads to about the same weight loss as a regular diet that helps you eat fewer calories each day. A 2025 BMJ review of 99 randomised trials found similar overall benefits. Alternate-day fasting led to slightly more weight loss, mainly in shorter studies. This does not mean that the 16:8 method is the best choice for everyone.

Fasting may help you lose weight if it stops you from snacking late at night or helps you eat less throughout the day. But if you eat much more during your eating window to make up for the fasting hours, you may not see the same benefits.

When it comes to insulin resistance, the results are not as clear. A 2026 review of 41 trials found that eating earlier in the day was linked to lower fasting insulin levels than eating later. However, the studies did not show a clear improvement in HbA1c or other measures of insulin resistance compared with regular diets. Most studies were also short.

So, while intermittent fasting may help some people, there is not enough evidence to say that it can reverse insulin resistance or replace the treatment recommended by your doctor.

Who Should Avoid Fasting Or Speak To A Doctor First?

Avoid weight-loss fasting during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you are underweight, or if you have a current or past eating disorder. People with type 1 diabetes should not try it on their own.

If you have type 2 diabetes, kidney disease or another ongoing illness, discuss fasting with your doctor first. Insulin and some diabetes tablets, especially sulfonylureas, can cause dangerously low blood sugar when meals are delayed. Do not change medicine doses yourself.

Stop fasting if you feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or unusually weak. If you have diabetes:

  • Check your blood sugar if possible. Treat suspected low blood sugar promptly if you cannot check.
  • For a reading below 70 mg/dL, take 15 g of fast-acting glucose, if you can swallow safely. Recheck after 15 minutes and repeat if still low.
  • Seek urgent help if it stays low. Fainting, seizures, or inability to swallow need emergency help; do not give food or drink by mouth.

How Can You Fit Intermittent Fasting Into an Indian Routine?

If fasting is suitable for you, a regular overnight gap can be a practical starting point. These are examples, not targets everyone must reach:

PatternFasting TimeExample Eating Hours
12:1212 hours8 am to 8 pm
14:1014 hours9 am to 7 pm
16:816 hours9 am to 5 pm

A 12-hour gap is a gentler timing option, not a proven treatment for insulin resistance. Other types include 5:2 fasting, with much less food on two days a week, and alternate-day fasting. There is no need to start with these stricter plans.

Choose simple, balanced meals

  • Add protein: Include foods like dal, chana, rajma, curd, tofu, eggs, or fish in your meals.
  • Eat more vegetables: Add sabzi to your plate, along with roti, rice, or other grains in portions that suit your needs.
  • Choose whole fruits: Have fruit instead of juice more often, and try to cut back on sweets, fried snacks, and sugary drinks.

For example, a simple meal of roti, dal, sabzi, and plain curd can be a good choice. The amount you eat depends on your health, daily activity, and weight goals.

Intermittent Fasting

Along with healthy meals, try to stay active, include strength exercises in your routine, and get enough sleep. These everyday habits can help you manage your weight and blood sugar levels.

Drink water during the fasting hours. Intermittent fasting for weight management does not require avoiding water.

Which Tests Can Help Check Your Blood Sugar?

Your doctor may suggest testing if you have previous high readings or risk factors such as a family history of diabetes, excess weight, or past diabetes during pregnancy.

HbA1c and fasting glucose help identify prediabetes or diabetes; they do not directly measure insulin resistance.

Test

What it shows

Preparation

HbA1c

Average blood sugar over about three months

No fasting when ordered alone

Fasting blood sugar

Blood sugar after an overnight fast

At least eight hours; follow the booked test’s instructions

Both use a blood sample. Anaemia and some blood conditions can affect HbA1c results. Your doctor may need a repeat or another test to confirm a diagnosis.

If your doctor has advised testing, Book an HbA1c test, insulin fasting test, or fasting blood sugar test with Redcliffe Labs. Check preparation instructions and home collection availability for your location. Redcliffe’s fasting glucose page currently specifies 10–12 hours of fasting.

If your doctor recommends wider diabetes monitoring, you can also view the Diabetes Profile–Essential package and check whether its included tests match your needs.

Choose an eating routine you can maintain alongside balanced meals, activity, and any prescribed treatment. Longer fasting hours alone do not guarantee better results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink chai or coffee while fasting?

Plain water, unsweetened tea, and black coffee generally fit a calorie-free fasting window. Milk, sugar, and honey add calories, so keep regular milk chai within your eating hours. For a fasting blood test, stick to plain water unless instructed otherwise.

Do I have to skip breakfast?

No. You can keep breakfast and finish dinner earlier. Earlier eating windows may offer some advantages, but no single schedule suits everyone. Your work hours, sleep, medicines, and ability to eat balanced meals should guide the choice.

How long does it take to see results?

Results take time and can vary from person to person. Instead of focusing on daily weight changes, look at how your weight changes over a few weeks. HbA1c shows your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months, so talk to your doctor about when to repeat the test to check your progress.

Should I exercise on an empty stomach?

You do not have to. Choose a time when you feel comfortable and have enough energy. If you take insulin or other medicines that can lower blood sugar, ask your care team how to time meals, exercise, and glucose checks safely.

Can intermittent fasting cause muscle loss?

Weight loss can include some muscle loss. Eat enough protein and include strength exercises to help protect your muscles. A shorter eating window does not automatically prevent muscle loss, and squeezing meals into fewer hours should not leave you eating too little.

Is religious fasting the same as intermittent fasting?

Not always. Religious fasts vary in food rules, timing, and whether water is allowed. Evidence from one eating schedule cannot automatically be applied to every religious fast. If you have diabetes, plan with your doctor before fasting for Ramadan, Navratri, or other observances.
