- It is a panel test, so it measures multiple factors and several types of cholesterol like low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), cholesterol, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and many more.
- This test helps to screen and monitor the risk factors related to heart (cardiovascular) diseases.

What is the purpose of a lipid profile test?
A lipid profile blood test helps in evaluating cardiovascular health by analyzing cholesterol levels in the blood.
Lipid profile tests can be used for many reasons:
- Screening: It is a routine test to get a review if your cholesterol is in a normal or borderline, intermediate or high-risk category.
- Monitoring: If you have tested before and the results were abnormal or you have other risk factors related to cardiovascular problems then a lipid profile test can monitor the cholesterol in your blood.
- Checking for response to treatment: If you have been advised to change your lifestyle or take cholesterol medications then a lipid profile test can check your response to treatment.
- Diagnosis: Some diseases that affect the liver can also be diagnosed by lipid profile testing.

When to get tested for a lipid profile?
In the following situations, a lipid profile test should be performed:
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Positive family history of high cholesterol
- Over 40 years of age
- When you are overweight or obese
Some common diseases in which a lipid profile test is performed are:
- Coronary heart disease: High cholesterol may build up on the walls of your arteries over time. As a result of the narrowing of blood vessels, the rate at which the heart receives blood is reduced. This causes angina (chest pain) and may lead to a heart attack if the blood vessels are completely blocked.
- Stroke: Stroke occurs when oxygen and blood-carrier vessels get blocked or burst and one of the leading causes of blockage in vessels is high lipid amount. So, it is important to get tested timely for a lipid profile test to avoid this situation.
- Peripheral arterial disease: In peripheral arterial disease, fat deposits build up along artery walls and interfere with blood flow. They may also affect the kidney arteries leading to several other serious complications.
- Type 2 diabetes: High levels of cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), cholesterol, triglycerides, total cholesterol has a closed bond with diabetes. So if one is diagnosed with diabetes it is best to get tested for lipid profile regularly.
- High blood pressure: When arteries narrow due to fatty deposition, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through them. Due to this, blood pressure becomes abnormally high.
So, if you or your loved one is at a risk factor of getting heart-related disorders, then without wasting much time schedule a lipid profile test with Redcliffe Labs.

Preparation for a Lipid Profile Test
1. Fasting Requirements:
- You need to fast for 10-12 hours before the test. You are required to avoid any foods and beverages but you can drink plenty of water.
2. Avoid High-fat Foods:
- Avoid consuimg high fat food items a night before your lipid profile tes. This may skew your test results.
3. No Alcohol:
- Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test, as it can interfere with your test results, particularly affecting triglyceride levels.
4. Hydration:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to the test. Being well-hydrated will make it easier for the technician to draw blood.
6. Wait After Significant Events:
- If you’ve had a recent heart attack, surgery, infection, injury, or if you're pregnant, it's recommended to wait two months before taking the test. These factors may temporarily affect your cholesterol levels.
Procedure for a Lipid Profile Test
1. Blood Sample Collection:
- A technician will use a needle to draw blood from a vein, usually from your arm (the bend of your elbow).
2. Analysis:
- The blood sample will be sent to the lab for analysis. The test typically measures Cholesterol-Total, Serum, CHOL/HDL RATIO, HDL Cholesterol Direct, HDL / LDL Cholesterol Ratio, LDL Cholesterol - Calculated, LDL/HDL RATIO, Non - HDL Cholesterol, Serum Triglycerides, & Serum VLDL.
3. Results:
- Results are generally available within 10 hours. If your lipid profile is high, your doctor may discuss lifestyle changes or treatments to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

What does a lipid profile test measure?
Various types of lipids such as low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), cholesterol, and others are measured in lipid profiles.
- Lipids: There are lipoproteins in the blood which carry two important types of lipids: cholesterol and triglycerides.
- It analyzes blood to measure different types of lipid, like total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Some more results include VLDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio.
- Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all the cells of the body that helps in the build-up of cells. In addition, it acts as a hormone and makes vitamins. If your cholesterol level is high, it can block your arteries and lead to serious health problems.
- HDL Cholesterol: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol removes other forms of cholesterol from the blood. High levels of HDL cholesterol contribute to reducing the risk of heart disease.
- LDL Cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is also known as bad cholesterol because it blocks the passage of blood vessels and leads to heart attacks and strokes.
- Triglycerides: Triglycerides are a type of fat stored in the body formed by having calories more than required. These triglycerides turn into energy when required. The excess level of triglycerides may contribute to the hardening and thickening of the arteries.
- VLDL Cholesterol: Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol is made by the liver. It is a type of LDL cholesterol. Where LDL cholesterol carries cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol carries triglycerides. The excess level can contribute to narrowing the passage of blood vessels.
- Non-HDL Cholesterol- A non-HDL cholesterol is a difference between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. If your total cholesterol is 180 mg/dL and your HDL cholesterol is 40 mg/dL then your non-HDL cholesterol is 140. It clears your bad cholesterol levels more.
These are the important measurements in a standard lipid profile. There are some more versions of the test that may report additional measurements.
What are the normal ranges of a lipid profile test?
In the lipid profile test, the following are the optimal or target levels for each part:
For anyone age 19 or younger:
|
For men aged 20 or older:
|
For women age 20 or older:
|
Total cholesterol - less than 170 mg/dL |
Total cholesterol - 125mg/dL to 200mg/dL |
Total cholesterol - 125mg/dL to 200mg/dL |
Non HDL - less than 120mg/dL |
Non HDL - less than 130 mg/dL |
Non HDL - less than 120mg/dL |
LDL - less than 100mg/dL |
LDL - less than 100mg/dL |
LDL - less than 100mg/dL |
HDL - more than 45 mg/dL |
HDL - more than 40 mg/dL |
HDL - more than 50 mg/dL |
Triglycerides are not a type of cholesterol, but a part of a lipid profile so the normal range for triglycerides is below 150mg/dL. Triglycerides that are borderline (150-199 mg/dL) or high (200 mg/dL or more) may require treatment.
Interpretation of the lipid profile test result
Parameters of lipid profile tests like total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol are high in level, then it indicates a risk of atherosclerosis, heart-related disorders, peripheral arterial disease, or stroke.
Whereas, a high level of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) reduces the risk of heart-related disorders.
How is the test performed?
