What a high TSH means, and common causes
A high TSH usually means an underactive thyroid. The brain raises TSH when it senses too little thyroid hormone, so the number moves opposite to what people expect.
Common causes: Hypothyroidism, most often from Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, thyroid surgery or radioiodine, some medicines including lithium and amiodarone, and recovery from a recent illness.
What a low TSH means, and common causes
A low TSH usually means an overactive thyroid, because the brain stops signalling when hormone levels are already high.
Common causes: Graves' disease, a toxic thyroid nodule, thyroiditis, too high a dose of thyroid medication, and early pregnancy, which naturally lowers TSH.
