What a high Total Protein means, and common causes
The combined albumin and globulin in blood is raised, which usually points to dehydration or to extra antibody production.
Common causes: Dehydration, chronic infection or inflammation, and conditions producing excess antibodies such as multiple myeloma, which usually also skews the albumin to globulin ratio.
What a low Total Protein means, and common causes
A low total protein usually reflects a low albumin and the same underlying causes.
Common causes: Liver disease, protein loss through the kidneys or gut, malnutrition, malabsorption, and severe burns.
