What TIBC measures

How much iron the blood's transport proteins could carry if fully loaded, which rises when iron is scarce.

What a high TIBC means, and common causes

A high TIBC means the blood has lots of spare capacity to carry iron, which is the classic pattern of iron deficiency.

Common causes: Iron deficiency, pregnancy, and oestrogen or contraceptive pills.

What a low TIBC means, and common causes

A low TIBC means less spare carrying capacity, typically seen when inflammation or iron overload is present.

Common causes: Chronic inflammation or infection, malnutrition, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, and haemochromatosis.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 250 to 450 mcg/dL.
Iron deficiency typically shows low serum iron, high TIBC and low ferritin. Inflammation shows low iron with low or normal TIBC and normal or high ferritin.
Sharir mein iron ki kami hai, isliye khoon mein iron uthane ki jagah khaali hai.
