What a high Sodium means, and common causes
Sodium is above range, which almost always means the body is short of water rather than carrying too much salt.
Common causes: Dehydration from inadequate water intake, vomiting or diarrhoea, uncontrolled diabetes, diabetes insipidus, and fever with heavy sweating.
What a low Sodium means, and common causes
Sodium is below range, called hyponatraemia. It is the commonest electrolyte abnormality and when it falls quickly it can cause confusion and seizures.
Common causes: Diuretic medicines, heart, liver or kidney failure, SIADH, excessive plain water intake, severe vomiting or diarrhoea, adrenal insufficiency, and some antidepressants.
