What a high SGPT/ALT means, and common causes

An enzyme from inside liver cells is leaking into the blood, which means liver cells are irritated or injured. It is one of the earliest signs of liver stress.

Common causes: Fatty liver is the commonest cause in India, then alcohol, viral hepatitis A B C or E, medicines including paracetamol in overdose and some ayurvedic or herbal supplements, and recent strenuous exercise.

What a low SGPT/ALT means, and common causes

A low SGPT is not considered clinically significant.

Common causes: Vitamin B6 deficiency and, occasionally, chronic kidney disease.
