An enzyme found in liver, heart and skeletal muscle, which leaks into blood when any of those tissues is injured.

What a high SGOT/AST means, and common causes
This enzyme is raised. It comes from the liver but also from heart and skeletal muscle, so a high value is not automatically a liver problem.
Common causes: Fatty liver, alcohol (which typically raises SGOT more than SGPT), viral hepatitis, medicines, heart muscle injury, muscle injury or very heavy exercise, and some muscle disorders.
What a low SGOT/AST means, and common causes
A low SGOT is not clinically significant.
Common causes: Vitamin B6 deficiency and chronic kidney disease.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
