What a high RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width) means, and common causes
Red cells vary more in size than usual, called anisocytosis. A raised RDW often appears before haemoglobin falls, making it an early clue.
Common causes: Early iron, B12 or folate deficiency, a mixed deficiency of more than one nutrient, recent blood transfusion, and recovery from anaemia as new cells appear.
What a low RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width) means, and common causes
A low RDW means cells are unusually uniform in size and carries no clinical significance.
Common causes: Nothing that needs attention.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
