What a high Potassium means, and common causes
Potassium is above range, called hyperkalaemia. High levels affect heart rhythm, so a genuinely high result is treated as urgent.
Common causes: Chronic kidney disease, ACE inhibitor and ARB blood pressure medicines, potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, adrenal insufficiency, and falsely high results when red cells break in the sample tube.
What a low Potassium means, and common causes
Potassium is below range, called hypokalaemia, which can cause muscle weakness, cramps and heart rhythm disturbances.
Common causes: Vomiting or diarrhoea, diuretic medicines, low magnesium, excessive laxative use, and some hormonal disorders.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
