What a high Platelet Count means, and common causes
More platelets than usual. Most often a temporary reaction to something else rather than a platelet problem in itself.
Common causes: Infection or inflammation, iron deficiency, after surgery or significant blood loss, after the spleen is removed, and rarely a bone marrow disorder such as essential thrombocythaemia.
What a low Platelet Count means, and common causes
Fewer platelets than usual, which means blood clots more slowly. Below about 50,000 the risk of bleeding becomes real, and below 20,000 it is urgent.
Common causes: Dengue and other viral fevers are by far the commonest cause in India. Also ITP, enlarged spleen, liver disease, some medicines and antibiotics, vitamin B12 deficiency and marrow disorders.
