What Phosphorus measures
A mineral that pairs with calcium to build bone and carries energy inside every cell. Cleared by the kidneys.

What a high Phosphorus means, and common causes
Phosphorus is above range, most often because the kidneys are no longer clearing it. Over time this damages bones and blood vessels.
Common causes: Chronic kidney disease, underactive parathyroid glands, excessive vitamin D, and a haemolysed sample.
What a low Phosphorus means, and common causes
Phosphorus is below range, which when severe causes muscle weakness and bone pain.
Common causes: Vitamin D deficiency, overactive parathyroid glands, malnutrition and refeeding after starvation, alcohol use, and antacids that bind phosphate.
