What a high PCV Haematocrit means, and common causes
A higher proportion of your blood is made up of red cells. Also called haematocrit. It rises whenever blood is concentrated.
Common causes: Dehydration is the commonest cause and is easily reversed. Also smoking, high altitude, chronic lung disease and polycythaemia. In dengue, a rising PCV with a falling platelet count is a warning sign of plasma leakage.
What a low PCV Haematocrit means, and common causes
A lower proportion of red cells, which tracks with anaemia.
Common causes: The same causes as low haemoglobin: iron, B12 or folate deficiency, blood loss, kidney disease, thalassaemia trait, and overhydration or pregnancy, which dilute the blood.
