What a high MCHC means, and common causes

Haemoglobin is more concentrated inside red cells than usual. A genuinely high MCHC is uncommon and often a laboratory artefact.

Common causes: Hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, severe burns, and falsely high readings from a lipaemic or haemolysed sample.

What a low MCHC means, and common causes

Haemoglobin is less concentrated inside red cells, giving the pale appearance described as hypochromia.

Common causes: Iron deficiency, thalassaemia, and long-standing anaemia of chronic disease.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 32 to 36 g/dL.
Usually not. It is more often a sample issue than a disease, and the lab will often repeat it before anyone acts on it.
Yeh anaemia ki nishani hai, khaaskar iron ki kami ki. Ferritin test se pushti hoti hai.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
