What a high MCH means, and common causes

Each red cell carries more haemoglobin than usual. It almost always moves with a high MCV and points to large-cell anaemia.

Common causes: Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, alcohol use, hypothyroidism, liver disease, and some medicines including metformin.

What a low MCH means, and common causes

Each red cell carries less haemoglobin than usual, giving the pale cells seen in iron deficiency and thalassaemia.

Common causes: Iron deficiency and thalassaemia trait are the two main causes in India, followed by anaemia of chronic disease.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 27 to 32 picograms per cell.
MCH is the amount of haemoglobin in an average cell. MCHC is its concentration, allowing for cell size. MCH follows cell size closely, MCHC does not.
Laal kanikaon mein haemoglobin kam hai, jo aksar iron ki kami ya thalassaemia trait ki nishani hai.
