What a high Magnesium means, and common causes
Magnesium is above range, which is uncommon and usually caused by supplements in someone whose kidneys cannot clear them.
Common causes: Chronic kidney disease, magnesium-containing antacids and laxatives, and excessive supplements.
What a low Magnesium means, and common causes
Magnesium is below range, which causes cramps, tremor and sometimes heart rhythm disturbances. It also makes low potassium and low calcium hard to correct.
Common causes: Diarrhoea, diuretic medicines, long-term proton pump inhibitors, alcohol use, poorly controlled diabetes, and malabsorption.
