What a high Homocysteine means, and common causes

An amino acid linked to higher risk of clots and heart disease when raised. It is most often a marker of B vitamin deficiency.

Common causes: Vitamin B12, folate or B6 deficiency, which is very common in vegetarian diets, chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism, smoking, and an inherited MTHFR variant.

What a low Homocysteine means, and common causes

A low homocysteine is favourable and needs no action.

Common causes: Not applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 5 to 15 micromol/L.
Correcting B12 and folate deficiency usually brings it down. Whether that reduces heart events is still debated, so it is treated as one risk marker among several.
Aksar B12 ya folate ki kami. Shakahari logon mein yeh aam hai, aur kami theek karne par level gir jaata hai.
