What a high HDL Cholesterol Direct means, and common causes
A high HDL is the one lipid result where a bigger number is usually good news. Above 60 mg/dL is considered protective against heart disease.
Common causes: Regular aerobic exercise, moderate weight, not smoking, and some genetic variants. Very high values above 90 are occasionally genetic and no longer seem to add protection.
What a low HDL Cholesterol Direct means, and common causes
A low HDL means less cholesterol is being cleared out of artery walls, which raises heart risk on its own. Below 40 mg/dL in men and below 50 in women is considered low.
Common causes: Physical inactivity, obesity particularly around the waist, smoking, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, high triglycerides, and some genetic conditions.
