What a high Glycated Hemoglobin means, and common causes

Your average blood sugar across roughly the last three months has been higher than normal. 5.7-6.4 percent is prediabetes and 6.5 percent or above meets the diabetes cut-off.

Common causes: Type 2 or type 1 diabetes, prediabetes, steroid medicines, and falsely high readings in iron deficiency anaemia, kidney failure and after a splenectomy.

What a low Glycated Hemoglobin means, and common causes

A low HbA1c is uncommon and usually reflects a problem with red cells rather than low blood sugar.

Common causes: Recent blood transfusion or blood loss, haemolytic anaemia, pregnancy, chronic liver disease, and haemoglobin variants such as thalassaemia or sickle trait, which interfere with the test.

Frequently asked questions

No. It measures a three-month average, so you can give the sample at any time of day, before or after a meal.
Changes show over two to three months because the test reflects the lifespan of red cells. Retesting sooner than that rarely tells you anything useful.
5.7 prathishat se kam normal hai. 6.5 ya usse upar diabetes ki range maani jaati hai, aur doctor iske saath fasting sugar bhi dekhte hain.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
