What a high Folic Acid means, and common causes
Folate is above range, which is almost always from supplements and is not usually harmful.
Common causes: Folic acid supplements and fortified foods. A high folate can mask the blood changes of B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues.
What a low Folic Acid means, and common causes
Folate is below range, which causes large-cell anaemia and, in pregnancy, raises the risk of neural tube defects.
Common causes: Poor dietary intake, alcohol use, pregnancy, malabsorption including coeliac disease, and medicines such as methotrexate and some anti-epileptics.
