What a high Ferritin means, and common causes
Iron stores appear full, but ferritin also rises with any inflammation, so a high value is not automatically iron overload.
Common causes: Infection or inflammation of any kind, fatty liver and other liver disease, alcohol, obesity, repeated transfusions, and genuine iron overload such as haemochromatosis.
What a low Ferritin means, and common causes
Iron stores are depleted. Ferritin falls before haemoglobin does, so it catches iron deficiency at its earliest stage.
Common causes: Heavy periods, pregnancy, poor dietary iron, hookworm, piles, stomach ulcers or gut bleeding, coeliac disease, and blood donation.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
