What a high Glucose Fasting means, and common causes
Blood sugar after an overnight fast is higher than it should be. At 100-125 mg/dL this is the prediabetes range; 126 mg/dL or above on two occasions meets the cut-off for diabetes.
Common causes: Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, stress or acute illness on the day of the test, steroid medicines, not fasting fully before the sample, pregnancy, and less commonly pancreatic or hormonal disease.
What a low Glucose Fasting means, and common causes
Blood sugar below about 70 mg/dL. In someone not on diabetes medication this is uncommon and usually not dangerous, but it matters if it comes with symptoms.
Common causes: Diabetes medicines or insulin taken before the test, a very long fast, alcohol, liver disease, adrenal or thyroid underactivity, and rarely an insulin-producing tumour.
