What a high D-Dimer means, and common causes
A raised D-dimer means a clot has formed and broken down somewhere. It is useful mainly for ruling clots out, because many harmless things raise it.
Common causes: Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, but also recent surgery, infection, pregnancy, cancer, liver disease and simply older age.
What a low D-Dimer means, and common causes
A low or normal D-dimer makes a significant clot very unlikely, which is the main value of the test.
Common causes: Not applicable. A normal result is the reassuring one.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
