What a high Cortisol means, and common causes
Cortisol is above range. Because it follows a daily rhythm, the time the sample was taken matters as much as the number.
Common causes: Stress or acute illness, Cushing's syndrome, steroid medicines, pregnancy and contraceptive pills, and a sample taken at the wrong time of day.
What a low Cortisol means, and common causes
Cortisol is below range, which when genuine can be dangerous because the body cannot respond to stress.
Common causes: Adrenal insufficiency including Addison's disease, pituitary disease, and sudden withdrawal of long-term steroid medicines.
