What a high Calcium means, and common causes

Blood calcium is above range. Persistent high calcium always needs a cause identified.

Common causes: Overactive parathyroid glands, which is the commonest cause, cancer affecting bone, excessive vitamin D or calcium supplements, prolonged immobility, and some diuretics.

What a low Calcium means, and common causes

Blood calcium is below range, which when marked can cause tingling, muscle cramps and spasms.

Common causes: Vitamin D deficiency, underactive parathyroid glands often after thyroid surgery, chronic kidney disease, low magnesium, pancreatitis, and low albumin, which lowers the measured total without lowering active calcium.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 8.6 to 10.3 mg/dL for total serum calcium in adults.
Almost half of blood calcium travels bound to albumin. When albumin is low the total reads low even though active calcium is fine, so the result is corrected for albumin.
Yes, and it is the commonest reason in India. The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium from food.
Haath pairon mein jhunjhunahat, maspeshiyon mein kharash aur cramps ho sakte hain. Vitamin D ki jaanch saath mein zaroori hai.
