What a high APTT means, and common causes
Clotting through the other main pathway is slower than normal, which can mean a bleeding tendency or the presence of an inhibitor.
Common causes: Heparin treatment, haemophilia A or B, von Willebrand disease, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, and lupus anticoagulant.
What a low APTT means, and common causes
A short APTT is rarely significant and is often a sample handling effect.
Common causes: Difficult venepuncture or a clotted sample, and sometimes acute inflammation.

Please note. This page explains what a number means against reference ranges for your age and gender. It does not diagnose anything, cannot see the rest of your report, and is no substitute for a doctor. If your lab’s printed range differs, your lab’s range applies.
