What a high Albumin, Serum means, and common causes
A high albumin almost always means the blood is concentrated rather than that the body is making too much protein.
Common causes: Dehydration, and occasionally a tourniquet left on too long while drawing the sample.
What a low Albumin, Serum means, and common causes
Low albumin means the liver is making less of this protein, or the body is losing it. It is one of the better markers of long-standing illness and nutrition.
Common causes: Chronic liver disease, kidney disease with protein loss in urine, malnutrition, malabsorption such as coeliac disease, long-standing inflammation or infection, heart failure, and severe burns.
