Increased blood sugar level is one of the most important concerns in today’s time, especially in diabetic patients. The HbA1C test is one of the most accurate methods to monitor your diabetes that reports the average level of sugar present in your blood over the past 3 months. The test results are not dependent on what you have consumed before the test. The results depend on factors like your age and if you have anaemia. Since the HbA1C test gives results in percentage, it often becomes difficult for the general public to interpret. Therefore, in this article learn about how you can convert the percentage blood sugar level to other units like mmol/mol or mg/dL. Also, know about the blood sugar levels of some of the common HbA1C values.

HbA1C is a key marker to monitor average blood glucose levels in diabetes patients. Experiencing signs like frequent urination, thirst and fatigue could be an indication of diabetes. HbA1C and associated diabetes management testing is crucial to monitor and regulate the blood glucose levels and prevent risks of kidney, heart, eye, liver damage etc. in the future.

HbA1C calculation

The estimated average blood glucose levels are calculated in the HbA1C test in percentage. There are simple calculators available on the internet. These calculators work on some simple formulae. To convert the percentage values of blood glucose levels to mg/dL or mmol/mol the following formula can be used:

Conversion of % to mg/dL

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the formula for conversion of % to mg/dL is:

Estimated Average Glucose Level = (28.7 X HbA1C) - 46.7

Where the estimated average glucose level is in mg/dL and HbA1C is in percentage.

Conversion of % to mmol/mol

Estimated Average Glucose Level = (10.93 X HbA1C) - 23.5

Where the estimated average glucose level is in mmol/mol and HbA1C is in percentage.

Normal A1C level chart

The HbA1C test reports the blood sugar level in percentage. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK), the normal blood sugar levels for non-diabetic, diabetic, and prediabetic people when tested with HbA1c test is summarised in the chart below:

S.No.GroupBlood Sugar Level
1.Healthy (Non-diabetic)Less than 5.7%
2.Prediabetic5.7% to 6.4%
3.Diabetic6.5% or more

Takeaway

Blood glucose levels are important parameters that should always be monitored and controlled especially if you are diabetic. The HbA1C test is one of the most accurate tests that measure the level of blood glucose in percentage as an aggregate of three months. Now that you know how to convert the percentage into other blood glucose level units, you will better be able to check your diabetic condition for yourself.
