Common lung diseases are classified into several categories, each with a unique cause and treatment plan.
Some are caused by environmental exposures, while others are caused by certain medications and autoimmune diseases.
These diseases are characterized by chronic coughing or wheezing and require medical treatment.
Research conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has led to new treatments and improved prevention of lung disease.
Common lung diseases include bronchitis, pneumonia, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung infection, etc. Bronchitis is caused by bacterial infection and occurs when pathogens are breathed into the small air sacs in the lungs.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a group of chronic conditions that affect the airways, the lung tissues, and blood circulation in and out of the lungs.
Lung diseases can affect your ability to breathe properly and can even lead to death. Correct diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment as there are different types of lung diseases. Different types of tests are required for the proper diagnosis of lung diseases. Early detection is essential for the treatment of lung diseases. So, make sure you get tested immediately if you experience symptoms like breathing difficulty, shortness of breath, cough, pain, or discomfort when breathing.
If you want to know about the 5 common lung diseases, their causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment, continue reading this article.
What Are Lung Diseases?
Lung diseases affect the human respiratory system. These conditions are caused by many factors, including air pollution, dust, and bacteria. Genetic problems can also affect the lungs. Smoking is another major factor. Early symptoms of lung disease are hard to spot. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment will help you avoid severe lung disease.
Most lung diseases can be fatal without proper treatment. The most common types include asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, and cystic fibrosis. All of these affect the alveoli, sacs in the lungs that exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen from the air we breathe.
Currently, several studies are being done to identify the environmental factors that cause lung disease. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health, long-term exposure to air pollution can affect lung development and increase the risk of respiratory diseases.
The Three Main Types of Lung Disease
If you've ever had a cough or shortness of breath, you probably know about the three main types of lung disease. These include lung tissue disease, airway disease, and lung circulation disease.
- Airway Diseases
As the name goes, these conditions affect the airway and make it difficult for people to breathe. Patients face difficulty breathing in and out of their lungs. Symptoms of lung disease include chronic coughing up mucus (also known as phlegm), wheezing, and chest pain. Early detection of lung disease is crucial for patients since early diagnosis will allow them to get treatment before the disease progresses. Many symptoms of lung disease start gradually, so it is important to seek medical attention right away if you start coughing. Early diagnosis will allow you to get the right diagnosis and make the right lifestyle changes. There are several types of airway diseases that can cause breathing problems. Some of these are Bronchiectasis and COPD.
- Lung Tissue Diseases
These diseases affect lung tissues, which makes it difficult for the lungs to expand, take in oxygen, and release carbon dioxide. Lung tissue diseases are a group of disorders that affect lung tissue structures. These conditions limit lung expansion due to scarring and inflammation, making it difficult for the lungs to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. People with these diseases have difficulty breathing and often feel like they are wearing a vest or sweater that is too tight. As a result, they can't breathe deeply. One example of a lung tissue disease is pulmonary fibrosis.
- Lung Circulation Diseases
There are several different types of Lung circulation diseases. Some of these diseases affect how air is moved from one part of the body to another. Others affect inhalation and exhalation. Pulmonary hypertension and Sarcoidosis are two of these conditions. The lungs contain various gases and are often affected by viruses, bacteria, and even environmental factors. Lung circulation diseases affect how blood flows from the heart to other body parts. These diseases make the circulation of oxygen difficult.
The 5 Most Common Lung Diseases
There are many lung diseases that affect people around the world. These include Asthma, COPD, pneumothorax, and atelectasis. These are all diseases that affect the lungs and need proper treatment.
- Asthma
Asthma is one of the most common lung diseases and can affect anyone of any age. It is a chronic inflammatory condition, and it is treated with a variety of medications. Proper medication and management will allow you to live a normal, active life with asthma. However, if you experience any pain or difficulty breathing during exercise, you should stop immediately and contact a doctor. Asthma symptoms can vary widely and can be quite severe. The most common symptom is a constant cough. Other asthma symptoms may include difficulty breathing, sleep disturbance, and difficulty concentrating. Many people with asthma also miss work, school, or social events. If left untreated, this illness can be fatal. Some people have asthma symptoms every day, while others may have occasional episodes. Some children may outgrow the condition with age. It is best to manage the disease and try to control the triggers to avoid the symptoms. Also, make sure you avoid sleeping on your back, as this will cause the airways to narrow and mucus to drip down into the throat.
- Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition in which inflammation of the bronchial tubes narrows the air passage, causing a cough. Bronchitis is usually caused by an infection and will get better within a few days, but it can develop into pneumonia in severe cases. Pneumonia can be life-threatening and requires medical attention. In most cases, bronchitis can be treated at home with antibiotics. However, you may need to visit a doctor for further testing if the condition worsens. Although chronic bronchitis is most often caused by smoking tobacco, exposure to air pollution, dust, and toxic gases can also cause bronchitis. People with a family history of the disease are also at increased risk of getting it. Symptoms of bronchitis include weight loss, chest discomfort, and swelling in the ankles. Bronchitis can be chronic or acute, depending on the severity.
- COPD
COPD is a group of lung diseases that affect the respiratory system and cause the airways to become blocked. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, and mucus production. About 15 million people in the United States suffer from COPD, but many more are unaware that they have the condition. More than half of these people are women. It is the fourth most common cause of death and disability in the U.S. People with COPD must visit their doctor regularly and make lifestyle changes to control symptoms. Often, symptoms can be controlled, and good quality of life can be maintained. COPD causes cigarette smoking and other irritants.
- Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is classified into two main types: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. These two types have different metastasis rates, meaning that cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer, usually starts on the outer sections of the lung. Although most cases of lung cancer are caused by cigarette smoking, there are many different types of lung cancer. There are many ways to diagnose lung cancer. Treatment options for lung cancer may include surgery, lifestyle changes, and other treatments. After treatment, you will be evaluated for possible side effects and monitored for any cancer-related symptoms. Smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Not only does smoking itself increase your risk, but secondhand smoke has a similar effect.
- Pulmonary Edema
Pulmonary edema is a common lung disease often associated with sudden shortness of breath. The symptoms can be frightening. Some patients experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, and even feel like drowning. Other symptoms can include coughing up blood or frothy mucus. A heart rhythm disorder may also occur. It is important to see a doctor as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. If pulmonary edema is diagnosed early, it can be cured or at least controlled. Treatment may involve modifying the patient's lifestyle to reduce blood pressure, lower elevation, and stress.
What Are the Common Lung Disease Causes?
Various types of lung diseases can be inherited, or they can develop due to exposure to certain substances or diseases. In either case, the lung tissue can become damaged or enlarged. This will prevent the lungs from performing their normal functions.
The most common lung disease causes are tobacco and the airways of poorly-ventilated homes. These causes may cause long-term inflammation and damage to the lungs. Some individuals may develop COPD despite not smoking for a long time. Smokers should try to stop smoking as it can help to prevent the development of COPD.
Another cause of lung diseases is occupational exposure. Exposure to dust and irritants on the job can cause lung disease. The effects of these diseases can last for a long time, and some occupations are at greater risk than others. For instance, coal mines workers are more prone to occupational lung disease than other workers. Here are some of the most common causes of lung diseases.
- Smoking
- Asbestos
- Radon gas
- Secondhand smoking
- Air pollution
- Harmful chemicals and gases
How Are Lung Diseases Diagnosed?
There are more than 200 different kinds of lung diseases. Some of these conditions result in inflammation and scarring in the lung tissues. This causes difficulty in getting enough oxygen to the lungs. Other parts of the lungs may also be affected. The symptoms of these conditions are similar to those of other respiratory conditions.
The first step in diagnosing a lung disorder is a physical examination. Afterward, a doctor will perform a chest x-ray to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Other tests may be necessary to determine the precise type of disease and its symptoms. During the physical exam, doctors will also measure the amount of oxygen in the blood and the amount of air your lungs can move or hold.
Common Lung Diagnostic Tests
Many common lung diagnostic tests can be used to diagnose lung disease. Here are some of them.
- Spirometry
- Challenge Test
- FeNO test
- Peak Flow Measurement
- Pulse Oximetry
- Plethysmography
- Diffusion Capacity Test
- Chest X-Ray
Common Lung Disease Treatment
Treatment of common lung diseases includes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of bacterial infections. Here is some common lung disease treatment.
- Treatment of Asthma
Asthma is a common respiratory condition that results in swelling and inflammation of the airways. Proper treatment is essential to avoid further episodes and maintain normal airway conditions. A correct diagnosis is the first step in effective treatment. The treatment and prevention of asthma should focus on preventing exposure to allergens. The most common treatment of asthma is using inhalers.
- Treatment of Bronchitis
Bronchitis symptoms can be treated with a combination of home remedies and medical care. Treatment options may include using humidifiers, inhalers, and medications. Anti-inflammatory medications, including steroids, are also available to relieve inflammation and repair tissue damage. Finally, breathing exercises such as pursed-lip breathing may be beneficial to help you slow down your breathing.
- Treatment of COPD
Various treatments for COPD are available. The main goals of treatment are to alleviate symptoms and avoid secondary medical complications. Among the medical treatments are beta-2 agnostics, mucolytic agents, oxygen therapy, and surgical procedures such as lung transplantation. Patients may also be treated with therapy designed to help them manage their disease.
- Lung Cancer Treatment
Earlier detection of Lung cancer is critical to improving survival rates. Patients should undergo regular screenings for any signs or symptoms, including a chest x-ray. Lung cancer treatment varies by stage and location of the tumor. Patients may undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery. The type of treatment will depend on the stage of cancer, the patient's general health, and their goals.
- Pneumonitis Treatment
The prevention and treatment of viral pneumonitis are important for the patient and the community. Many people will experience mild symptoms of the illness and recover at home with rest and plenty of fluids. In more severe cases, antibiotics are prescribed for pneumonitis treatment. However, these drugs will only be effective against bacterial pneumonia, not fungal or viral ones.
- Lung Inflammation Treatment
For mild lung inflammation treatment, medications such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be used to ease symptoms. They are also effective in chronic cases of lung inflammation. However, they should be taken under the advice of a doctor. In the case of severe lung infections, patients may require an intravenous infusion of anti-inflammatories.

Hi Mirtha, It's understandable to feel anxious about seeing stable areas of scarring in your lung base on your CT scan reports. While "stable" typically indicates that the scarring hasn’t changed, it’s important to discuss your concerns directly with your doctor. They can provide context, explain what the scarring means, and whether it requires further evaluation or monitoring. Having an open conversation with your doctor will help alleviate your worries and give you a clearer understanding of your health.
