Introduction

Haldi or turmeric naturally contains anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties, making it a versatile treasure trove of natural goodness. Turmeric is a heroic spice, the star ingredient of the kitchen since time immemorial, adding not just colors but flavors to foods. When combined with milk, this dynamic duo becomes a powerhouse of wellness appreciated by people worldwide.

If you are an Indian, you must have tried a traditional Indian beverage, haldi milk or turmeric milk. It is an age-old Ayurvedic remedy that can treat coughs, colds, wounds, and other ailments.

Today’s blog is dedicated to the benefits of golden milk (haldi doodh), or turmeric milk, and its potential side effects. Incorporating turmeric milk into your diet will do wonders. It can promote a healthy digestive system, strong bones, and healthy metabolism and enhance overall well-being.

Haldi doodh (turmeric milk) is an immunity booster: The golden milk is touted to have immunity-boosting properties. Research reveals that curcumin in turmeric naturally possesses antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, which may help prevent infections and illnesses.

Turmeric milk improves skin: Do you know drinking haldi doodh or turmeric daily can detoxify the body and contribute to improved skin complexion? Curcumin allows the liver to flush out toxins, minimizes impurities from the skin, and promotes clearer and healthier skin.

Helps with respiratory issues: Haldi doodh is also believed to offer several benefits to respiratory conditions. Turmeric milk can be drunk to recover from bronchitis, coughs, and asthma. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe inflamed airways and improve breathing.

Helps prevent cancer prevention: Studies reveal that curcumin in turmeric also contains anti-cancer properties that help inhibit the expansion of certain cancer cells.

Haldi Doodh helps combat heart diseases: Turmeric milk is very good for heart health. Turmeric curcumin is believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may improve the functioning of the blood vessel lining.

Health Alert: The main ingredients of turmeric milk, such as ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric, can minimize the chances of heart problems.

Haldi doodh may improve memory and brain function: Turmeric can improve brain functioning. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in curcumin is a growth hormone that helps form new neural connections in the brain. Elevated levels of BDNF can also lower the risk of brain diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Golden milk may reduce blood sugar levels: Ginger and cinnamon in turmeric milk may help lower fasting blood sugar levels by 13 % and 29%, respectively.

Helps with wound healing: Turmeric can be used to treat any wound on the outer surface of a human or animal body. Turmeric's curcumin has bio-functional properties that play a crucial role in healing wounds. Turmeric milk is an ancient Ayurvedic practice for healing cuts, wounds, burns, and other skin injuries.

It is good for females: Haldi doodh is a natural painkiller that helps women with joint and bone pain. Consuming turmeric milk with jaggery can help women build stronger bones and lower the risk of arthritis and osteoporotic pain in the knee, back, and hips.

It protects liver health: Haldi doodh is also good for your liver. Its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties support liver function and protect against any damage.

Turmeric milk is a true blessing in many ways, including boosting immunity, minimizing the risk of heart disease, stress relief, cancer prevention, blood sugar regulation, and more. It is easy to make turmeric milk.

Let’s look at the steps involving making turmeric milk and enjoy the drink that enhances overall wellness.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened milk.
  • One teaspoon of turmeric
  • One grated fresh ginger. (You can also use half tsp of ginger powder)
  • Cinnamon powder (½ tsp)
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • One teaspoon of honey

Directions:

  • Mix all ingredients, and boil.
  • Reduce the flame.
  • Simmer all ingredients in the pan for about 10 minutes
  • Strain the turmeric milk into mugs with the help of a fine strainer. Top it with a pinch of cinnamon.

Note: You can also make golden milk in advance. Store it in your refrigerator and reheat it before drinking it.

Potential Side Effects of Turmeric Milk

Turmeric milk is generally safe for the body. However, excessive consumption of turmeric milk for prolonged periods can cause side effects, including:

  • Gastrointestinal issues: Consuming large amounts of turmeric milk can cause gas, bloating, or diarrhea.
  • Allergic Reactions: Consuming haldi doodh in large quantities can cause itching, rashes, hives, or difficulty breathing.
  • Gallbladder Issues: It can exacerbate existing gallbladder problems and may cause discomfort.

Conclusion:

Turmeric milk, or haldi doodh, offers various benefits for which it has been honored for centuries. Turmeric has also been accepted in Ayurveda and modern medicine. Incorporating turmeric milk into your diet can increase immunity and do more wonders. Knowing its side effects to reap all its benefits is equally important.

Thankyou. But how many times a day for best effect should one drink turmeric milk. Would it help with UTI.?

    • MyHealth Team

      Sep 16, 2024 at 11:48 AM.

Turmeric milk can be beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Drinking it once or twice a day is usually sufficient. While it may help support overall health and boost immunity, it's not a substitute for specific UTI treatments prescribed by your doctor. For UTIs, continue following medical advice and treatments.

Adding honey to Haldi doodl whilst it is heating weakens the benefits of honey, also I have never heard of adding honey to turmeric milk.

    • MyHealth Team

      Sep 16, 2024 at 11:57 AM.

Adding honey to turmeric milk while it's hot can reduce some of honey’s beneficial properties because high heat can degrade its enzymes and antioxidants. If you prefer to add honey, do so after the milk has cooled slightly. Many people combine honey with turmeric milk for its potential added health benefits and to improve taste, but it’s not a common practice everywhere.

      Sep 16, 2024 at 12:04 PM.

Turmeric milk can be beneficial for its anti-inflammatory properties, which might help with general wellness. However, if your daughter is asthmatic, it's essential to introduce any new food or drink gradually and observe her reaction. Always consult with her healthcare provider before making changes to her diet, especially for managing a condition like asthma.

Can one just grate turmeric and drink it alone as tea?

      • MyHealth Team

        Sep 13, 2024 at 4:37 PM.

Yes, you can grate fresh turmeric and drink it as tea. Simply grate a small amount of turmeric root, add it to hot water, and let it steep for a few minutes. You can strain it if you prefer a smoother tea. Adding a pinch of black pepper can enhance the absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.

I think it helped me with sore throat an improved my sleep. Does it help with inflammation or is it related to the duration that I take it?

      • MyHealth Team

        Sep 11, 2024 at 7:28 AM.

Haldi (turmeric) milk is known for its anti-inflammatory properties due to curcumin, the active compound in turmeric. It can help reduce inflammation and may provide relief for a sore throat. Improved sleep might also be a result of its calming effects. Consistent use over time can enhance these benefits, as curcumin works best when taken regularly. However, results may vary depending on your body’s response and the duration of intake.

Hi Fascinating article I was advised to add a pinch of turmeric into a teacup of milk to releive insomnia. According to recent research one should refrain from adding honey to hot beverages. As it crystallises in one's system.

      • MyHealth Team

        Sep 11, 2024 at 2:57 PM.

Thank you! Adding a pinch of turmeric to milk can indeed help with insomnia due to turmeric's calming properties. You're right about recent research suggesting that honey should not be added to hot beverages, as high heat can alter its beneficial properties and potentially lead to crystallization in the body. It's better to add honey once the drink cools down slightly.

I do not heat the mixture and drink it cold or at room temperature. It is not bad tasting. I feel the benefits of the milk acting on my body on a daily basis. Is it okay to drink it cold or should it be warmed up? Thank you

      • MyHealth Team

        Sep 11, 2024 at 3:00 PM.

        Hi Ivan,

It's perfectly fine to drink haldi milk at room temperature or cold if you prefer it that way, especially since you're already feeling its benefits. While traditionally it's consumed warm for better absorption and soothing effects, the benefits of turmeric and milk are still effective at room temperature. Continue as you are if it’s working for you!

        Thankyou
