Foods to Avoid if Diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

Foods to avoid if diagnosed with hypothyroidism:

Soy-containing foods:

According to studies, soy-rich foods can alter and affect the body's ability to absorb thyroid medication properly. Goitrogens have also been discovered in soy-based food products, which can cause thyroid gland irritation. Goitrogens are a type of compound that causes the thyroid gland to swell (goitre). Consumption of goitrogens can aggravate hypothyroidism. To manage hypothyroidism, people should actively reduce their consumption of soy-based foods. The following foods should be avoided:

  • Soya chunks
  • Tofu
  • Soy milk

Cruciferous vegetables:

While some vegetables are good for health, certain cruciferous vegetables are high in goitrogens. Avoid eating broccoli, spinach, cabbage and cauliflower if you are diagnosed with thyroid problems

Fried or fatty foods

Excessively fried food contains fat that can interfere with the body's ability to absorb thyroid hormone replacement medication. Fats can also impair the thyroid's ability to produce the hormone thyroxine. Furthermore, fatty foods that are high in calories can be challenging to digest for people who have a slow metabolism. In hypothyroidism, this can lead to excessive weight gain. Excessively fatty foods, such as butter, mayonnaise, margarine, and other fried foods, should be avoided.

Foods high in fibre

Fibrous foods such as beans, legumes, and vegetables, can cause excessive complications in hypothyroid patients. A high-fibre diet, such as green legumes and whole grains, can interfere with normal digestive system functions and the body's ability to absorb hypothyroidism medication. As a result, foods like whole green bean legumes should be avoided or reduced.

Inflammatory food to avoid hypothyroidism

Several foods are considered inflammatory in Hyperthyroidism. Excessive consumption of these foods can result in thyroid gland inflammation and worsen the condition.

These include:

  • Some fruits, such as strawberry, peaches,
  • Starchy food, such as sweet potato and cassava
  • Foods high in sugar or have a high glycemic index: can lead to spiked blood sugar levels and inflammation.

Nuts to be avoided with hypothyroidism

People who have hypothyroidism should avoid eating a lot of nuts like millets, peanuts, or pine nuts.

Along with these, some more foods to avoid include:

  • Coffee
  • Canned/packaged food
  • Food that is highly processed
  • Alcohol
  • Green tea
  • Supplements for health

Dealing with hypothyroidism can be difficult, but the symptoms can be managed with smart eating and a proper diet.

Foods to avoid of diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism:

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the body produces too much thyroid hormone. Diet plays a crucial role in producing and using thyroid hormones in the body.

So what are some of the foods that need to be avoided if I have Hyperthyroidism?

Food that contains excess Iodine

Iodine is a central component of the thyroid hormone. Consuming excessive iodine with your food can cause increased production of thyroid hormone and worsen your condition. Avoid eating:

  • Excessive ionised salt.
  • Kelp
  • External iodine supplements
  • Fish and seaweed
  • Egg yolk since it contains excessive Iodine.

Soy-rich foods

Soy-rich foods are typically detrimental to the overactive thyroid gland. Soy milk, soy sauce, soybean oil, tofu, and edamame are all examples.

Caffeine

Caffeine consumption might increase hyperthyroidism symptoms. Caffeine can cause an increase in heart rate and palpitations. Caffeine might exacerbate anxiety and insomnia symptoms. When diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, try to avoid coffee, sugar drinks and other caffeinated stimulants. Refrain or reduce the consumption of chocolate, energy drinks, soda, black tea, and coffee.

Foods with added sugar

Too much sugar is bad for the body as it causes a sudden spike in blood sugar levels. An elevated blood sugar level can produce palpitations and an increase in heart rate. Soft drinks, pancake syrup, jelly, and cakes are packaged foods. This product contains added sugars such as dextrose, fructose, and corn syrup. Foods with added sugar are often empty calories that aggravate hyperthyroidism symptoms.

Gluten

A gluten-rich diet is hypoglycemic, disrupting normal blood sugar levels. Food products such as pasta, rice, and bread include gluten, which is difficult to digest and activate hyperthyroidism symptoms. Gluten can also trigger thyroid inflammatory responses.

Avoid dairy and whole milk

Dairy products are often high in Iodine, which is harmful to those with Hyperthyroidism. Avoid consuming excessive milk, cheese, egg yolks, and other dairy products.

Alcohol

consumption can be harmful to the thyroid glands and impairs the body's general capacity to use and absorb thyroid hormones.

All of these are good to know. My friend has hypothyroidism but she eats bologna and cheese, Pepsi, peaches and cottage cheese and coffee and she doesn’t listen to me that those are bad for her. Can you suggest a list of good food sources

    • MyHealth Team

      Nov 5, 2024 at 4:39 AM.

Hi Cynthia, For hypothyroidism, focus on nutrient-rich foods: lean proteins like chicken and fish, whole grains like quinoa, leafy greens, berries, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts), and iodine sources like seaweed (in moderation). Adding selenium and zinc-rich foods, such as Brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds, can also support thyroid health. Avoid excess sugar and processed foods for better energy and metabolism. Small, gradual changes in diet can make it easier to maintain these healthy habits.

I did not realize that I had High Blood Pressure. This caused a heart attack. I was then told to stop eating salt because it raises BP. I stopped using salt and then developed thyroid issues due to a lack of iodine. I was then told I had Hypothyroidism… Hashimotos.

      Oct 28, 2024 at 8:51 AM.

We are sorry to hear about your health issues. It’s common to be unaware of high blood pressure until a serious event like a heart attack occurs. While reducing salt helps manage blood pressure, it's crucial to ensure adequate iodine intake, as a lack can lead to hypothyroidism, like Hashimoto's. Work closely with your healthcare provider to manage both your blood pressure and thyroid health, and consider a balanced diet that includes iodine-rich foods.

If I’m reading this right you’re basically saying anyone with an under active thyroid has to live on water and kelp and seaweed? Not sure that’s going to sustain me. What a miserable existence.

    • Myhealth Team

      Sep 23, 2024 at 7:58 AM.

Living with an underactive thyroid doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to water, kelp, and seaweed. While iodine-rich foods like seaweed can support thyroid function, a well-balanced diet with a variety of nutrient-dense foods is key. Focus on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. It’s about managing your thyroid health with the right nutrients, not restricting your diet to only a few foods. You can still enjoy a fulfilling and varied diet!

This condition could be due to improper medication adjustment or other thyroid-related issues. Consult your healthcare provider to review your treatment plan and adjust your medication as needed.

    Jul 21, 2024 at 5:26 PM.

I have read quite a few articles on how to lose weight whilst having an interactive thyroid. The more I read the more confused I become. One article states that you should have certain foods and supplements and another says these shouldn't be eaten/taken?? As a person who has suffered from hypothyroidism for six years due to been given radioactive treatment, which has obviously gone from hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism.... My weight is slowly creeping up year by year and I have gained lots of belly fat along with other fat. I am becoming more depressed as time goes on and have been on numerous dietary regimes. I would like some advice and guidance that doesn't contradict itself. Regards Sonia Moscardini

    • MyHealth Team

      Jul 22, 2024 at 6:29 AM.

Managing weight with hypothyroidism, especially after radioactive treatment, can be challenging and confusing. To help you, ensure your thyroid medication is optimized and regularly check your levels with your doctor. Focus on a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, and vegetables, while avoiding processed foods and sugary drinks. Regular physical activity, including cardio and strength training, is crucial. Limit foods high in goitrogens, such as soy and cruciferous vegetables, as they can interfere with thyroid function. Consider supplements like selenium and iodine, but only after consulting with your doctor. Consistency and patience are key. If you have any specific concerns or need personalized advice, please consult with a healthcare professional or a dietitian.

Just be cautious with iodine-rich foods like seaweed, as too much iodine can affect your thyroid. Since you can't drink milk, enjoying cheese in moderation is fine. Which is better to avoid or at least limit with hypothyroidism? Rice or potatoes? Wheat or rye bread?

    • MyHealth Team

Hi Ken Margo, For hypothyroidism, it's better to limit potatoes due to their higher glycemic index, and opt for brown rice instead. Between wheat and rye bread, rye bread is a better choice as it has a lower glycemic index and is less likely to cause blood sugar spikes. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

I have hypothyroidism i m taking thyronorm medicine but my hairs are thinning and falling... This hormone normal after grow back my hair..?

    • MyHealth Team

      May 24, 2024 at 12:51 PM.

Hair thinning and loss can be symptoms of hypothyroidism. Thyronorm helps regulate thyroid hormones, which may improve hair growth over time. However, other factors like nutrition and stress can also affect hair health. If you're still experiencing hair loss despite medication, consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and potential adjustments to your treatment plan.

Perhaps my brain isn't functioning tonight but it seems to me that lack of iodine CAUSES hyperthyroidism and you should AVOID iodine if you have it. Can anyone clear this up for me? Also my daughter has this condition....tsh is 1.412. Found goiter on a CT scan. PCP wants an ultrasound but I don't know what else should be done. A specialist? How often is good to follow it and with tsh test and/or ct scan (for size)?? Gee if anyone can answer I'd appreciate it as I've googled my heart out and don't have answers to these questions. Thank you in advance.

    • Myhealth Team

      May 22, 2024 at 7:27 PM.

Hi, We can help clarify your questions. While iodine deficiency can lead to hypothyroidism, excessive iodine intake can indeed worsen hyperthyroidism, especially in individuals with underlying thyroid conditions like Graves' disease. For your daughter's condition, it's essential to consult an endocrinologist or thyroid specialist for further evaluation and management. They can perform an ultrasound to assess the goiter's size and determine the best course of action. Follow-up frequency and tests will depend on the specific diagnosis and treatment plan. Generally, regular monitoring with TSH tests and periodic imaging (ultrasound or CT scan) may be recommended to track thyroid function and goiter size. Thankyou

    • Myhealth Team

      May 15, 2024 at 12:16 PM.

Can hyperthyroidism patients take peanuts butter?

    • MyHealth Team

      Jun 3, 2024 at 5:16 PM.

It's great to hear that you're feeling well and taking care of your health with exercise and a balanced diet! When it comes to thyroid issues, there are indeed some dietary considerations to keep in mind. Peanuts and peanut butter contain goitrogens, which are substances that can interfere with thyroid function when consumed in large amounts. However, for most people, moderate consumption of peanuts or peanut butter is unlikely to cause any issues. Similarly, fish is generally considered safe for people with thyroid issues, as it provides valuable nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, which can be beneficial for overall health.

As for Celsius Drinks, while they don't contain caffeine, it's important to be cautious about the high biotin content. Biotin supplements can interfere with certain thyroid function tests, leading to inaccurate results. However, the amount of biotin in Celsius Drinks may not be significant enough to cause problems, especially if consumed in moderation. If you're concerned, it's always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider, who can offer personalized advice based on your specific health needs and any medications you're taking. Keep up the great work with your healthy lifestyle, and take care!

Yes, hyperthyroidism patients can generally consume peanut butter in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Peanuts are a good source of protein, healthy fats, and various nutrients, including selenium and zinc, which are beneficial for thyroid health. However, it's essential to consider individual dietary preferences and any specific recommendations from a healthcare provider. Some individuals with hyperthyroidism may have dietary restrictions or sensitivities, so it's best to consult a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized dietary advice.

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for 20 yrs. I am under supervision of my Dr and take Levothyroxin daily to maintain my thyroid levels. I’m really confused about foods to avoid from this list. I’ve been on a mostly vegan/ vegetarian diet for 10yrs. I eat a lot of vegetables too, which are on this list, soy (tofu), rice, peanuts, green teas, etc. Is it safe for me to continue my Whole Foods/plant based diet?

      • MyHealth Team

It's generally safe for you to continue your whole foods/plant-based diet with hypothyroidism. Just ensure you're getting enough iodine and selenium. Moderate consumption of soy and cruciferous vegetables shouldn't pose a problem. Keep your doctor informed and monitor your thyroid levels regularly.
