Pain & Common Symptoms
Published on 5 October 2026
A swollen upper eyelid can happen for several reasons, and most cases are not serious. A stye is a common cause, especially if you have a small, red, tender lump near your eyelashes. Allergies can also make the eyelid puffy and itchy, particularly after exposure to pollen, dust, or a new eye product. Irritation, eyelid inflammation, or rubbing your eyes may cause swelling too. For mild swelling, try a clean, warm compress over the closed eye for 5–10 minutes, a few times a day, and avoid rubbing or squeezing the area. If the swelling is severe or worsening, affects your vision, causes significant eye pain or fever, or spreads around the eye, seek medical care promptly.
