Various types of lipids such as low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), cholesterol, and others are measured in lipid profiles.
Lipids: There are lipoproteins in the blood which carry two important types of lipids: cholesterol and triglycerides.
It analyzes blood to measure different types of lipid, like total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Some more results include VLDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio.
Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all the cells of the body that helps in the build-up of cells. In addition, it acts as a hormone and makes vitamins. If your cholesterol level is high, it can block your arteries and lead to serious health problems.
HDL Cholesterol: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol removes other forms of cholesterol from the blood. High levels of HDL cholesterol contribute to reducing the risk of heart disease.
LDL Cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is also known as bad cholesterol because it blocks the passage of blood vessels and leads to heart attacks and strokes.
Triglycerides: Triglycerides are a type of fat stored in the body formed by having calories more than required. These triglycerides turn into energy when required. The excess level of triglycerides may contribute to the hardening and thickening of the arteries.
VLDL Cholesterol: Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol is made by the liver. It is a type of LDL cholesterol. Where LDL cholesterol carries cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol carries triglycerides. The excess level can contribute to narrowing the passage of blood vessels.
Non-HDL Cholesterol- A non-HDL cholesterol is a difference between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. If your total cholesterol is 180 mg/dL and your HDL cholesterol is 40 mg/dL then your non-HDL cholesterol is 140. It clears your bad cholesterol levels more.
These are the important measurements in a standard lipid profile. There are some more versions of the test that may report additional measurements.
In the lipid profile test, the following are the optimal or target levels for each part:
For anyone age 19 or younger: |
For men aged 20 or older: |
For women age 20 or older: |
Total cholesterol - less than 170 mg/dL |
Total cholesterol - 125mg/dL to 200mg/dL |
Total cholesterol - 125mg/dL to 200mg/dL |
Non HDL - less than 120mg/dL |
Non HDL - less than 130 mg/dL |
Non HDL - less than 120mg/dL |
LDL - less than 100mg/dL |
LDL - less than 100mg/dL |
LDL - less than 100mg/dL |
HDL - more than 45 mg/dL |
HDL - more than 40 mg/dL |
HDL - more than 50 mg/dL |
Triglycerides are not a type of cholesterol, but a part of a lipid profile so the normal range for triglycerides is below 150mg/dL. Triglycerides that are borderline (150-199 mg/dL) or high (200 mg/dL or more) may require treatment.
Parameters of lipid profile tests like total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol are high in level, then it indicates a risk of atherosclerosis, heart-related disorders, peripheral arterial disease, or stroke.
Whereas, a high level of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) reduces the risk of heart-related disorders.

A lab-qualified technician from Redcliffe Labs collects a blood sample. First, a needle is inserted into a vein in the arm, generally at the bend in your elbow.
A blood sample is then delivered to our advanced testing lab for accurate analysis. The test requires 10-12 hours of fasting. Prior to the test, nothing can be consumed except water.
With Lipid Profile Test, your doctor may assess the lipid levels and measure cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
Elevated lipid levels point to hyperlipidemia, which significantly increases one’s risk of strokes, heart attacks, and other health problems.
Cholesterol is one of the lipids (specific fats), and a lipid profile tests for its levels to ensure whether you have a healthy amount in your blood or not.
You may generally need to fast for 10-12 hours for a lipid profile blood test. Also, people on certain medicines should discuss and follow the doctor’s instructions.
If you are above 45, have obesity, are not engaged in enough physical exercise, have diabetes, blood pressure problem, or any other chronic health problem, your doctor may call for a routine lipid profile test. It checks your cholesterol levels, which are related to all these problems.
Lipid Profile is a package that consists of 9 tests, including Cholesterol Total, Cholesterol/HDL ratio, HDL Cholesterol Direct, HDL/LDL Cholesterol Ratio, LDL Cholesterol Direct, LDL/HDL Ratio, Non-HDL Cholesterol, Serum, Triglycerides, Serum, and VLDL test.
A lipid profile test is performed after 10–12 hours of fasting to get accurate results, as eating or drinking anything except water might affect your test results.
Yes. You can definitely drink water before going for the lipid profile test. To get 100% accurate results, it is best to avoid using any other liquid.
