A swollen upper eyelid can occur for several reasons, and many cases are not serious. A stye is a common cause, particularly when a small, red, painful bump appears near the eyelashes. Allergies may also cause puffiness and itching, especially after exposure to dust, pollen, or new eye products. Other possible causes include irritation, eyelid inflammation, or excessive eye rubbing. For mild swelling, apply a clean, warm compress over your closed eye for 5–10 minutes, several times a day. Avoid rubbing or squeezing the affected area. If the swelling becomes severe, affects your vision, causes significant pain or fever, or spreads around the eye, seek medical attention promptly.
