Mild pain at the back of your head near the base of the skull is often related to neck muscle tension, poor posture, sleeping in an awkward position, prolonged screen time, or a tension-type headache. Sometimes, tight or strained neck muscles can also cause pain that spreads upward toward the back of your head. You should try giving your neck some rest, changing your position regularly, and doing gentle neck movements. However, if the pain becomes severe, keeps getting worse, follows an injury, or occurs with fever, weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or a sudden severe headache, you should consult your doctor.
