Blood Sugar test in Mathura

Diabetes Screening and its tests

Diabetes is one of the lifelong illnesses that can cause other life-threatening diseases, including stroke. The pancreas is an organ that produces insulin hormone, it exists behind the stomach which regulates blood sugar levels. Too little insulin or abnormal functioning of insulin causes abnormally high sugar or glucose levels in the blood.

There are many tests which give a complete analysis of all types of diabetes (type 1 or 2, and gestational). Tests are easy to perform, and the results are quickly available. The list of tests is as follows:

How to manage diabetes?

Uncontrolled diabetes can cause extensive damage to tissues and other body organs like nerves, eyes, kidneys, and the heart, along with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Type 2 diabetes needs an active lifestyle, a balanced diet, and some oral medications to be under control. While type 1 diabetes needs insulin every day in injectable form, that is why type 1 diabetes is also known as insulin dependent diabetes. And type 2 diabetes comes under the category of non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Lack of insulin makes glucose ineffective in the proper utilization and processing. All three types of diabetes have excess glucose in their blood streams.

Early Sign and symptoms of diabetes

High blood glucose levels due to diabetes may cause certain symptoms like: excess thirst, frequent urination, unintended weight loss, hunger, blurry vision, and fatigue. But the disease (type 2 diabetes) progresses slowly, so people with high blood sugar levels mostly don’t feel the symptoms. But the symptoms of type 1 diabetes develop quickly since the disease falls under the category of acute disease.

Blood Sugar test in Mathura

Blood sugar tests are essential to detect diabetes, and knowing the levels of sugar in the blood is also essential. Here are the tests:

Urine Analysis:

Urine analysis alone is not sufficient, so blood tests are needed to confirm diabetes.

Blood Analysis:

Blood analysis is used to detect sugar levels in the bloodstream. And there are two ways:

Fasting blood glucose level:

If the fasting blood glucose level comes in at 100-125 mg/dL, it is considered prediabetes. And if the fasting glucose level is higher than 126 or more, it is considered diabetes.

Hemoglobin A1c test:

It confirms diabetes if the test result shows a value of HbA1C greater than 6.5%.

A glucose tolerance test

It measures the blood sugar levels after and before consuming the glucose-containing drink. For the test, you have to fast, or not eat anything before the test. A first sample of blood is drawn during this stage. Other readings of blood sugar levels are taken after consuming the glucose-containing liquid at the time intervals of 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours, respectively.

Blood tests during pregnancy for gestational diabetes

These blood tests are conducted during the 24-28 weeks of pregnancy, but if you are at a higher risk of this type of diabetes, a doctor may advise you to have the earlier test.

Glucose screening and tolerance tests

For this test, patients have to drink a glucose-containing liquid and their blood sugar level is measured after 1 hour to rule out diabetes. If the tests show a higher level (more than 140 mg/dL), then the glucose tolerance test is performed in the same way as described above to confirm gestational diabetes.

Normal ranges of blood glucose tests are:

Blood sugar values are measured in mg/dL (milligrams of sugar per deciliter) or sometimes in mmol/L (millimoles of sugar per liter).

One part of the blood glucose tests is done during a fasting state, like in the morning when a person wakes up or on an empty stomach. It is known as the pre-prandial or Fasting blood glucose level, and it is considered normal if the test value comes in at less than 100 mg/dL. Another part of the test is done after 2 hours of consuming a meal. It is known as the post-prandial blood glucose level. It is considered normal if the test value comes below 180 mg/dL.

  • Pre-prandial or Fasting blood sugar level: less than 100 mg/dL
  • Post-prandial blood glucose level: less than 180 mg/dL

If the physician has any doubt about diabetes, he will probably recommend all the blood tests, especially HbA1c, to the suspected patient.

To diagnose diabetes, a glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) test is usually performed, which determines the average level of blood sugar over the previous three months. The blood glucose level is considered normal if the value of this test is less than 6.5%.

HbA1c level: less than 6.5%
