The components of LFT help to understand each characteristic of liver function. These components are:

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT): This is a blood test used to determine the level of Alanine Aminotransferase in the blood, which is found in the liver. Alanine is the most used biomarker for liver health. The enzyme was previously known as serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT). The ALT enzyme is mainly found in the serum and organ tissues of the liver. Some significant concentrations have also been detected in the kidney, skeletal muscle, heart, and pancreas.

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): This blood test is usually performed to evaluate the level of enzyme Aspartate Aminotransferase in the blood which is found in the liver. It is an enzyme which is previously known as serum glutamate oxalate transaminase (SGOT) The AST enzyme is present in all tissues except bone, with the highest levels in the liver and skeletal muscles.
