You can develop an UTI by exposure to bacteria that enter through the urethra and, then the bladder. Mostly the infection develops in the bladder but can also spread to the kidneys if you ignore it for long. Most of the time your body can get rid of these bacteria, but in a few cases, there is an increased risk of getting UTIs.
Women are more prone to urine problems as their urethra is shorter and closer to the uretheral opening. In addition, you are more likely to get an infection after sexual activity, using unhygenic washrooms etc.
In women, menopause also increases the risk.
Males can also get UTIs, and it is a more compliceted infections for them. The condition is common in males of older age as then you are more likely to develop non-cancerous enlargement of their prostate gland. This enlargement of the prostate gland compresses the bladder neck and makes it harder for you to urinate, and if the bladder doesn’t empty completely, it can create problems.
