Thyroid disorders are primarily of two types – hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The only way you can determine which thyroid complication you have is by getting a thyroid function test.
This includes the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) evaluation.
If the TSH levels are higher than normal, it suggests that you have an underactive thyroid gland, meaning that you have hypothyroidism. Some of the common symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Heightened sensitivity to cold
- Dry skin
- Weight gain
- Hoarseness
- Puffy face
- Constipation, etc.
If the TSH levels are lower than normal, it indicates a hyperactive thyroid gland, meaning that you have hyperthyroidism. Some of the symptoms of this condition are:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Faster heart rate
- Irregular heart rhythm
- Nervousness
- Jitters
- Heart palpitations, etc.
Either condition requires medical attention and immediate treatment to get manage the symptoms better.
