Hyperthyroidism results from a hyperactive thyroid gland, which results in the abundant production of thyroid hormones in the blood. This leads to a barrage of symptoms, including unexpected weight loss, fatigue, feeling hot, muscle weakness, goiter, menstrual cycle irregularities, etc.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the dos and don’ts of hyperthyroidism:
Dos of Hyperthyroidism:
- Eat a low-sodium diet
- Increase the intake of goitrogens, including cruciferous vegetables
- Eat iron-rich foods since iron levels drastically drop in hyperthyroidism
- Supplement with the prescribed dosage of calcium and Vitamin D
- Eat anti-inflammatory foods like salmon, nuts, etc.
Don’ts of Hyperthyroidism:
- Avoid eating iodine-rich foods like seaweed, sushi, kelp, etc.
- Avoid eating eggs, iodized salt
- Avoid eating processed meats, celery, lettuce, etc. that are high in nitrites
- Avoid including excess caffeine in your diet
