Around 2-5% of thyroid problems are congenitally inherited or due to family history. It is due to genetic mutations in two of the genes – PAX8 and TSHR. These are responsible for the growth and function of the thyroid gland and improper formation leads to the prevalent thyroid disorders we later experience in life.
Besides that, around 75% of the patients who get a diagnosis for a thyroid disorder report that someone in their family has the same too. The prevalence of autoimmune disorders in the families is also a potential cause of a thyroid problem.
