Treating thyroid symptoms solely depends on whether you have an underactive or overactive thyroid.
An underactive thyroid causes hypothyroidism, which is treated with supplementation with synthetic thyroid hormones, otherwise known as levothyroxine.
An overactive thyroid causes hyperthyroidism, which is treated with a variety of treatment options, including taking anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or undergoing surgery to remove the thyroid gland permanently. In case of removal of the thyroid gland, the patient has to be on levothyroxine for the rest of their life.
