The primary known cause of type-1 diabetes is due to an overactive immune system, which destroys the islet cells in the pancreas that produce the insulin hormone. Besides that, the condition is also caused by genetic factors or unwanted exposure to viruses and other environmental factors.
There are also studies that indicate that geography plays a role as well. It is believed that people who live away from the equator are at a heightened risk of developing type-1 diabetes.
Also, type-1 diabetes is known as juvenile diabetes since its typically diagnosed in childhood, either between the age of 4-7 or between 10-14 years.
