Much like type-1 diabetes, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes have an inability to produce optimal levels of insulin hormone in their bodies.
Although the exact cause is still unknown, some studies indicate that being overweight or obese are possible triggers of gestational diabetes.
Also, some of the other potential risk factors include:
- History of prediabetes
- Leading a sedentary lifestyle
- History of gestational diabetes with previous pregnancies
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Genetic factors
- History of giving birth to a baby with a birth weight of more than 9 pounds
If you are experiencing any early signs and are at risk of developing this condition, we’d recommend discussing your concerns with your OBGYN.
